6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb — Umbwe Route

6 days Private climb; camping — experienced trekkers only

Umbwe climbs the southern face of Kilimanjaro almost in a straight line, gaining height quickly on steep forest ridges before joining the Southern Circuit near Barranco. It is the least-walked route, genuinely wild in its lower section, and the scenery — narrow ridge-crests with drops on both sides, then the Barranco Wall — is as dramatic as the mountain gets.

The catch is acclimatisation. Reaching Barranco (3,900 m) on day two, straight from the gate, is a hard, fast ascent, and summit success on Umbwe is markedly lower than on the longer routes. We only recommend it for fit, experienced high-altitude trekkers, ideally with a recent climb behind them, and always with a spare day built in.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Drive to the Umbwe gate and climb a steep forest trail along a ridge between two rivers to Umbwe Camp (about 2,940 m).

2
Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

A steep day up the ridge, out of the forest and into the moorland, joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco Camp (about 3,900 m) beneath the Great Barranco Wall.

3
Barranco to Karanga Camp

Scramble up the Barranco Wall (no ropes) and traverse a series of valleys to Karanga Camp (about 3,995 m) — a short day for acclimatisation.

4
Karanga to Barafu Camp

Climb the rocky ridge to Barafu Camp (about 4,670 m) on the edge of the summit approach. Early dinner and rest.

5
Summit day, then Mweka Camp

From around midnight, climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for sunrise, then a long descent to Mweka Camp (3,100 m).

6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final descent through the rainforest to the gate and your summit certificate.
