Mt.Kilimanjaro Climbing Adventure

The Kilimanjaro volcano last showed signs of major activity in the Pleistocene era, (about 4 million years ago). It is not only the highest mountain in Africa, rising 4,877m above the surrounding plains to 5895m, but also one of the largest volcanoes in the world, covering an area of some 388,500 hectares. The mountain has three main peaks of varying ages with clusters of small cones around the base.Kibo, the highest and most recently formed peak still show signs of minor activity in the centre. It consists of a crater within a crater with an ash pit in the centre. Uhuru Peak is on the southern rim of the outer crater, the sides of which are 2 kms apart. Kibo still retains permanent ice and snow, although the area covered is rapidly diminishing, with one glacier extending as low as 4500m. The oldest peak, Shira, rises to 3962m, with only the western and southern rims remaining. The remains of the northern and eastern rims are covered by later materials that have erupted from Kibo. This has led to the formation of the relatively flat Shira Plateau which covers 6200 hectares between the two peaks.

The rugged Mawenzi peak at a height of 5149m lies to the east. It’s erosion-carved form has a steep 1000m eastern face with a complex series of gullies and rock faces, rising above two deep gorges, the
Greater Barranco and Lesser Barranco. Linking Mawenzi to Kibo is the Saddle a vast plateau that forms the largest area of high-altitude tundra in tropical Africa.

5-Days Marangu Route Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning and driven to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. Once signed
in at the park and final preparations are complete, we start ascending on a cleared ridge trail through the rainforest. The
forest is where most of Kilimanjaro’s animals are found. Our first night is at Mandara Hut camp set in a forest clearing. This
camp consists of a group of wooden A-framed huts and flush toilets behind the main hut.

In the morning we leave camp and trek through a short stretch of forest through to moorland, circumventing the base of the
Maundi Crater. In the afternoon we will reach the Horombo Hut where will we stay overnight

Today we continue our ascent into the Alpine desert zone to Kibo Hut. From Kibo Hut, the summit is now only another
1195m ascent. This afternoon we will have an early dinner, prepare your personal gear for the summit and then get some
sleep. Our summit trek starts tonight.

You will be woken around 23:30pm, and after a hot breakfast we will start our final summit. The first section of the trail
consists of a rocky path to Hans Meyer point (5250m). The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5681m) on the crater rim.
This section is very steep with alot of scree.
From Gillman’s Point we could encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After
taking photos at the summit we start the 3 hours descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest we pack up all your personal
gear and trek down to Horombo Hut (3 hours). Tonight is our last night on the mountain.

This morning we make our final descent down to Marangu Gate where we started. You will be taken for lunch and here you
will receive your summit certificate to commemorate your great achievement.
We will then drive you back to your hotel where we will say our farewell.

8-Days Machame Route Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a friendly representative from Nesa Africa Safaris will be there to welcome you. You’ll then be transferred comfortably to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and recover from your journey.

Attend a pre-climb briefing led by our experienced guides. During this session, we will review the Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary, discuss important safety tips, and ensure you are well-prepared for the adventure ahead

Tips:

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi | Meal Plan: Dinner

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate (10,000 ft) for registration. Begin your trek through lush rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and various bird species. The 6-7 hour hike covers approximately 11km to reach Machame Camp (9,840 ft).

Tips:

Hiking: 6-7 hours | Elevation: +3,840 ft | Habitat: Rainforest

Today’s 4-6 hour hike takes you through heather and moorland zones. The trail becomes steeper as you ascend to Shira Camp (12,500 ft), offering your first clear views of Kibo Peak.

Tips:

Hiking: 4-6 hours | Elevation: +2,660 ft | Habitat: Moorland

Hike east towards Lava Tower (15,190 ft) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (13,044 ft). This ‘hike high, sleep low’ strategy helps with acclimatization.

Tips:

Hiking: 6-8 hours | Elevation: +2,350 ft / -2,150 ft | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Start with a challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall, then trek through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp (13,106 ft). This shorter day helps with acclimatization.

Tips:

Hiking: 4-5 hours | Elevation: +62 ft | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Hike to Barafu Camp (15,331 ft), your base for the summit attempt. Rest, prepare your gear, and try to get some sleep before the midnight start.

Tips:

Hiking: 3-4 hours | Elevation: +2,225 ft | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Begin the summit attempt around midnight, reaching Stella Point (18,885 ft) at sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), then descend to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft).

Tips:

Hiking: 12-16 hours | Elevation: +4,010 ft / -9,276 ft | Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate (5,380 ft), receive your summit certificates, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for celebration and rest.

Tips:

Hiking: 3-4 hours | Elevation: -4,685 ft | Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch

7-Days Shira Route Itinerary

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours; here
we will complete entry formalities while guides and porters prepare
equipment. We then continue to drive up a steep path to the Shira Gate
where we will begin the hike. The trek starts through shrubs and giant
heather until we reach Simba Camp

Today is a fairly easy day to help with acclimatization. We begin by
exploring the grassy moorland and volcanic rock formations on the plateau.
Then we take a scenic path to the Shira Cathedral, a huge buttress of rock
surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles, before settling at Shira 2 Camp

We continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the
Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down
to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest
to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the
same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for
acclimatization.

We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great
Barranco Wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft
cliff. From the top of the Barranco Wall we cross a series of hills and valleys
until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One more steep climb up
leads us to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day meant for acclimatization

We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka
Trail. We continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you
have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit
from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early
dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo
are viewable from this position.

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the
summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the
trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme.
We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but
short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft), you will be rewarded with the
most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi
Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount
Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down
to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is
very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful.
Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be
expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last
dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Begin the summit attempt around midnight, reaching Stella Point (18,885 ft) at sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft), then descend to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft).

Tips:

Hiking: 12-16 hours | Elevation: +4,010 ft / -9,276 ft | Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

7-Days Rongai Route Itinerary

We will register at Marangu Park Gate and then drive to the Rongai trailhead and the Nale Moru village. This drive will take
approximately 2 ½ hours. Once there we will begin your trek and cross maize fields and climb through a pine forest. This
climb is a gentle one on a small winding path. The first night’s camp is at First Cave, approx 2,600m altitude.

Today our trek continues up towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m), and reaching Kikelewa Cave at 3600 meters. From
here you will see how majestic Kilimanjaro is. Tonight’s camp is at Third Cave Camp (Kikelewa Caves).

oday we start with a short but steep climb up grassy slopes. At the top you will have magnififcent 360 degree views. Our
next camp for the night is beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi (4330m).

We will spend an extra day at Mawenzi Tarn to acclimatize. Here we will explore the area surrounding Mawenzi Tarn and
then in the afternoon rest as preparation for continuing trek tomorrow.

Today we cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite (4750m) at the bottom
of the Kibo crater wall. The rest of the day is spent in preparation for the ascent. During this time you will have an early
dinner, finish preparing your personal gear and get some sleep.

We will wake you up at 23.30 hours, have some breakfast and then at midnight start our ascent. The first section of the trail
consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m). We then zigzag up to Gillman’s point (5681m), on the crater rim.
This section is very steep with much stone scree and is the most demanding section of the route. From Gillman’s Point we
could encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After taking photos and breathing
in the views we descend back to Kibo Hut and then Horomobo where we camp overnight for our last night on Mount
Kilimanjaro.

This morning we continue our descent, passing Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu Gate. We will then go to lunch and you
will receive your summit certificates. After lunch we will drive you back to your hotel and say our farewell.
